Women with the potential to be great innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders now have a chance to flex their imagination and test their ideas courtesy of a £200,000 fund and a package of additional support, hosted by Innovate UK.

The aim is to facilitate “businesswomen” (we prefer the term entrepreneurs) with ideas ripe for development, to transform them into viable innovative products or services which can impact on and drive economic growth.

There are four key areas covered by the awards, including:

  • manufacturing and materials
  • infrastructure systems
  • emerging and enabling technologies
  • health and life sciences

Innovate UK is waking up to the unique situation facing women by making this the first women-only competition as part of its new ‘infocus’ initiative to encourage more diversity in innovation. Some of which meets the goals of our Missing in Action: Women and Digital Enterprise in the UK progamme.

Rather than have a handful of beneficiaries, the competition will reward 12 finalists, who will receive a package of support tailored to their needs, while four winners will each receive £50,000 to support their innovation project or activities.

Among the professional mentors and ambassadors are Facebook vice president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa Nicola Mendelsohn, Money&Co chief executive Nicola Horlick, president of the Royal Academy of Engineering and deputy vice-chancellor of the University of Cambridge Ann Dowling, Cambridge Wireless former founder CEO Soraya Jones and Genius Gluten Free founder Lucinda Bruce-Gardyne.

The competition is now open and the deadline for registration is noon on 24 August 2016, and a briefing session for potential applicants will be held on 20 June 2016.
